When Brian van der Merwe and his family came to Kleinmond to visit relatives, they weren’t just taken by the natural beauty — Brian saw a growing community in need of reliable, professional security. Brian’s journey started in the South African Air Force in 1985, where he qualified as a Radio Technician and later worked in defence contract services. By the time he arrived in Kleinmond, he brought with him not just technical expertise, but discipline, heart, and vision. Ocean Security was founded later that same year, and it didn’t take long for the community to take notice.
From the beginning, Brian took a hands-on approach. He wired systems, responded to calls himself, and earned the trust of the town one client at a time. In 1999, he partnered with SAFE Security in Hermanus, helping grow it into the largest security provider in the region over the next 17 years. Later, he acquired Sandown Bay Security — and with that, laid the foundation for a business built to last.

Brian’s daughter, Chené Deetlefs, plays a vital role in branding, marketing, and growing the company’s voice and reach. His son, Heinrich van der Merwe, is involved in the technical and operational side of the business, continuing the hands-on legacy Brian started. And holding it all together with warmth and care is Brian’s wife, Anli — affectionately known by the team as the “mother hen” of SBS. She’s the one who checks in, makes sure everyone’s looked after, and brings the kind of steady, nurturing presence that every great team needs.
Together, they’ve built something more than just a security company — they’ve built a community cornerstone.
